The most awesome places to be
Nonni Travel is a fully licensed travel agency and tour operator located in the beautiful North of Iceland – a trustworthy and reliable name and source of inspiration to clients and partners all over the world.
Since 1988, from Akureyri
Nature lover Helena Dejak founded Nonni Travel in 1988 and managed the company for more than two decades, until Ingi Þór Guðmundsson made his dream come true and stepped into her footsteps in 2016, together with the Nonni Travel team.
In 2023 Nonni Travel celebrated 35 years of company history. Along the way we received the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) Heidi Andersson Pilot Project Award for excellent work and dedicated participation in linking tourism and conservation in the Arctic – an award we are proud of.

Keep the Arctic clean
Sustainable tourism strives to be both ecologically and culturally sensitive while giving its clients a meaningful and enjoyable experience. Nonni Travel is firmly dedicated to its promotion, and is proud to have received – jointly with Arcturus Expeditions – the WWF Pilot Project Award for the development of sustainable tourism in the Arctic (Ittoqqortoormiit, NE Greenland).
In 1997 Nonni Travel established a sister company in Ittoqqortoormiit (Scoresbysund), which later became a WWF-awarded project – with majority ownership in local hands.
- Understanding the culture, politics and economy of the communities we visit
- Supporting local economies by purchasing local goods and working with small local businesses
- Seeking out environmentally conscious partners who use the least possible non-renewable resources

Named after a storyteller from Akureyri
Jón Sveinsson – affectionately called Nonni – wrote children’s books that were immensely popular in Iceland, Germany and many parts of Europe. Our founder Helena Dejak read his books as a young girl in Slovenia, and it became her dream to visit Iceland, the land of fire and ice.
Little did she know that she would end up living in Akureyri, Nonni’s old hometown, founding a travel company which makes other people’s dreams of visiting Iceland a reality.
5 Day Tour In the Footsteps of Nonni
Jón Sveinsson is born on 16 November at Möðruvellir in Hörgárdalur.
The family moves to Akureyri, into the little black wooden house today called “Nonni’s house”.
Aged twelve, a French nobleman offers to pay for his education in France.
He starts writing about his childhood adventures and travels the world lecturing.
Nonni dies in Cologne, Germany – after 12 books, about 5000 lectures and translations into some 40 languages.
